Perfect Apple Crisp

November 22, 2019 by amyreeves24@gmail.com Leave a Comment

Apple Crisp, Apple Pie, Apple Cobbler… I really do love them all. But for me and my kitchen, Apple Crisp is where it’s at! Specifically this deceptively simple and completely delicious version. It couldn’t be easier or more delicious!

Dear People Who Name Apples,

Where do you get off naming the worst apple of them all the “Red Delicious”? It is not delicious. It is the worst apple out there. I demand transparency and honesty in my apples, and request that we change the name to “Red Mealy and Disappointing”.

I anxiously await, your response.

But really, you guys. For the longest time, I thought I didn’t like apples, because my only apple experience was with the mealy and bland standard red delicious. When my eyes and tastebuds were opened to the likes of Pink Ladies, Jonagolds, and Honey Crisp, I changed my tune. I love apples! I love them plain as a snack, and super extra puffy heart love them as the MVP of this Apple Crisp.

And while I’m airing grievances, can we cool it with the ultra fussy and extra desserts? I don’t want any “Brown Butter Pumpkin Spice Caramel Apple Streusel Oat Cinnamon And Cardamom Crisp with Bourbon and Brown Sugar Vanilla Bean Cream Sauce.” Some of you probably read that and are like, “that sounds delicious”. And let me just save you a little time and tell you that you are too fancy for my blog.

Let’s take it back to the basics. Apples. Sugar and cinnamon. Oats, flour, more sugar. Bake it all in the oven and something magical happens. We don’t need to dress it up. The beautiful fall flavors get lost with too much going on, and it’s absolutely perfect the way it is.

Except don’t you dare serve it without vanilla ice cream. What are you, a monster?

Extremely simple in preparation, no fancy kitchen tools or even a mixer are required for this recipe. But if I may suggest one life changing kitchen contraption?

This fantastic apple corer, peeler and slicer. I love it. We use it constantly, just for quickly preparing an apple to snack on! Something about a spiral apple makes it extra fun, and more interesting for the kid crowd at my house.

An apple goes in, and a fun little apple spiral comes out! Just slice that baby in half and you’re ready to go for the cobbler! In about 3 minutes, I had 8 apples ready for becoming a crisp.

And here’s a hot take: I’d take apple crisp over pumpkin spice anything any day. Fight me.

No, don’t fight me. Just make this apple crisp and come join my team of Apple Crisp Enthusiasts. We meet once a month, and we eat Apple Crisp.

Got a hankering for more fruit desserts? May I humbly suggest my Brown Butter Nectarine Cobbler, Raspberry Bread Pudding, or Redneck Apple Dumplings. All guaranteed to be a hit, or your money back.

Ingredients Method Notes

Ingredients

  • 8-9 apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 c oats
  • 1 c flour
  • 1 c packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 c butter melted

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Toss sliced apples with sugar, flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour apples into a 9×13 pan and spread evenly.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1/2 c melted butter. Mix until combined. Use hands to spread crumbles evenly over apple slices.
  3. Bake for 45 minutes, or until bubbly and browned around the edges.
  4. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

I like to use 1/2 granny smith apples and 1/2 sweet apples such as Honey Crisp, Gala, Pink Lady, Fuji, etc.
